Arsenal FC started out as a factory team called Dial Square in 1886 - the workers were blacksmiths building cannons, which is why the club is known as Gunners.  Soon after, the club turned professional and changed its name to Woolwich Arsenal to become a full member of the Football League (the first club in the south of the country) in 1893.
